Phon to Khon Kaen
80 km

I started the day bright and early and arrived here in Khon Kaen with plenty of daylight to burn. There is a stark contrast between these two towns separated by 80 km of beautiful rice field countryside. On my way I stopped to watch a brilliant football match between a bunch of thai village kids. A waterlogged muddy field, no shoes, and make shift goals only added love for the sport. It made me laugh.

Khon Kaen, home to the largest university in Northeast Thailand has more of a youthful spirit. Plenty to do for those techno pumping johnie walker drinking individuals with lots of bars/nightclubs to get your groove on, swanky hotels, and western eateries to satisfy everyones cravings. The municipal government has spent a significant fortune trying to promote a healthy lifestyle and have built two very beautiful waterparks. A visit to both of them revealed many joggers/runners, bikers, picknickers, and couples holding hands.

I have found my stay at the First Choice Hostel so relaxing that I extended my stay for 2 nights. My ass and quads thanked me profusely for it.

I write this sitting on their outside balcony appreciating the sights and sounds passing by. Within a span of an hour I have seen a flat bed truck full of go-go dancers in short silver skirts and knee high boots likely selling something that I shouldn't partake in and a guy riding an elephant selling fresh mangos. Only in Asia!

Tomorrow I push on to Udon Thani. The Laos border is rapidly approaching.
